Permanent Exhibition
The exhibition BROKEN BRUSHES shows 79 printed graphic works by German Expressionists. On 17 January 2016, the Kunsthaus Salzwedel opened the exhibition to the public. It features renowned artists, including Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Max Pechstein, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz, Erich Heckel, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Käthe Kollwitz, Max Liebermann and Franz Marc.
Along with paintings in bold, expressive colours, Expressionism is best known for its printed graphics. The expressive force and significance of form and line is clearly and impressively visible in the exhibited lithographs, woodcuts, linocuts and etchings.
With the expressive depiction of societal, social and political conditions, the artists broke with the accepted norms of the conventional art scene. All artists have in common that National Socialism disrupted or even shattered their lives. The artists’ common historic background is the theme of the Collection BROKEN BRUSHES.
Until 2023, the Kunsthaus Salzwedel will be showing this exhibition of graphic works from the collection of the US art dealer Gus Kopriva. The Kunststiftung Salzwedel would like to offer our sincere thanks to Gus and Sharon Kopriva for making it possible for these first-rate artists to be shown in Salzwedel. The exhibition BROKEN BRUSHES initiated the project of building the Kunsthaus Salzwedel. The project marks the first step towards saving the neo-Gothic building as one of the most dominating city structures from decay.
Guided tours, theme nights, workshops and other events will be offered in connection with the
exhibition, which is going to be shown for several years. The Kunsthaus is working on presenting visitors with a multifaceted view of Expressionist art and its time.
